Breeder's Awards Program

 

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Breeder’s Award Program (BAP) is to recognize and encourage the keeping and Spawning of Freshwater Aquarium vertebrates and invertebrates.

 

Freshwater Aquarium vertebrates and invertebrates - Any animal that is of interest to the typical freshwater aquarist

 

THE BAP COMMITTEE MAKEUP AND FUNCTION: The BAP committee is made up of one chair and up to 2 additional members their purpose is to oversee BAP Program including awarding points to qualifying members, maintaining records and presenting awards, As well as revising the rules and regulations when necessary.

 

ANIMALS NOT PERMITTED:

 

(1)    Walking Catfish: The Walking Catfish, (Clarius batrachus) and other members of the exotic catfish family Claridae, including but not limited to species of the genera Clarias, Heteropneustes, Gymnallables, Channallabes, and Heterobranchus are prohibited. Any live specimens of Walking Catfish or other Claridae species within the boundaries of the State of Oklahoma are contraband and subject to seizure by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

(2)    Grass carp: Release of grass carp, also known as white amur or Chinese carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) or their hybrids into public waters is prohibited in accordance with 29 O.S., Section 6-504. Importation, possession and introduction of grass carp or their hybrids for the purpose of stocking private waters is permitted.

(3)    Boney-tongue group: Osteoglossum spp., and Arapaima spp.

(4)    Piranha group: Serrasalmus spp., Pygocentrus spp., Rooseveltiella spp., Catoprion spp., Hydrocynus spp., and Salminus spp.

(5)    Electric Eel (Electrophorus electricus).

(6)    Electric catfish (Malapterus electricus).

(7)    Gar-pike topminnow (Belonesox belizanus).

(8)    Snakehead groups: Opicephalus spp., and Channa spp.

(9)    Pavon or Peacock Bass (Chichla temensis and Chichia ocellaris).

(10)    Parasitic South American Catfish group (Candiru), genera & species of the Trichomycteridae family. Vandellia spp., Tridens spp., and Pyqidium spp.

(11)    Freshwater Stingray group: Paratrygon spp., Potomotrygon spp., and Disceus spp.

(12)    Houri (from South America): Macrodon spp., and Hoplias spp.

(13)    Rudd and rudd hybrids (Scardinius spp.).

(14)    Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix).

(15)    Silver carp (Aristichthys nobilis).

(16)    Black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus).

(17)    Alewives (Aloso pseudoharengus).

(18)    Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax).

(19)    Blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis).

(b)    Tilapia:

(1)    The sale and use of all Tilapia species as bait is prohibited.

(2)    The stocking of all Tilapia species in any heated-water reservoir including Sooner, Konawa and Boomer Reservoirs is prohibited.

(3)    This shall not interfere with the sale of dead and/or processed Tilapia for human food or the sale or transport of Tilapia species for the purpose of aquatic vegetation control in privately owned ponds.

 

 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR BAP AWARD:

 

  1. A completed BAP form must be submitted along with one or all of the following:
    1. 6 fry at least 3 months of age donated to the BAP auction.
    2. A written article on the spawning of the species, submitted for publication in any TOKAC publication.
    3. An oral presentation on the spawning of the species.
    4. Completion of a, b, and c for a species will result in an additional ten points being                    awarded to the participant.

 

ELIGIBILITY:

 

  1. All members in good standing are eligible for BAP. If any member should not renew their membership, awarded points will be kept on an “inactive list” until such time that they renew their membership.
  2. Any person joining TOKAC and transferring from another club will be allowed to transfer “spawns” from the other club.  The “spawns” will follow TOKAC BAP guidelines. Certificates or awards will not be given for “transferred spawns”.

 

AWARDS:

 

  1. Certificates will be awarded for each species propagated.
  2. Certificates will be given upon completion of each BAP Class.
  3. Plaques will be given upon completion of each Level
  4. A lifetime TOKAC membership will be awarded to anyone becoming a Grand Master Breeder and above.
  5. Other special awards and contests may be given at the discretion of the BAP Committee.

 

LEVELS OF ACCOMPLISHMENT:

 

Requirements for the levels of accomplishment are as follows:

 

  • Breeder: a total of 100 points, plus one completed class, and one article, oral presentation, or artwork.
  • Senior Breeder: a total of 300 points, plus completion of two classes, and two articles, oral presentations, or artworks.
  • Expert Breeder: a total of 500 points, plus completion of four classes, and a total of two articles, oral presentations, or artworks.
  • Master Breeder: a total of 800 points, plus completion of six classes, and a total of four articles, oral presentations, or artworks.
  • Grand Master Breeder: a total of 1,000 points plus completion of all classes, and a total of six articles, oral presentations, or artworks.
  • Advanced Grand Master Breeder: a total of 1,500 points plus completion of all classes, and a total of eight articles, oral presentations, or artworks.
  • Expert Grand Master Breeder: a total of 2,000 points plus completion of all classes, and a total of ten articles, oral presentations, or artworks.

 

 

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

CLASSES:

 

There are nine classes A-I. Taxonomic groups and similar spawning techniques determine the different classes.

 

POINT VALUE:

 

Point values are based on the following criteria – Difficulty in spawning and/or rearing of fry in the aquarium

 

CLASS LISTINGS:

 

Class A - Livebearers

These fish are similar in that they all have live young.  Included are all species of: Ameca, Brachyrhaphis, Chapalichys, Heterandria, Gambusia, Goodeidae, Poecilia, Skiffia, Xenotocas , Xiphophorus, and others

 

Completion of this class requires the propagation of six species.

 

5 points: All Poecilia sp.

10 points: All species not mentioned in other point groups

15 points: Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus sp.

20 points: Brachyrhaphis  and Skiffia sp.

 

 

Class B -Anabantoids

These fish are grouped together mainly due to the presence of a labyrinth organ, which enable these fish to live in low oxygen environments.  2 types for spawning are common, bubble nests and mouth brooding.  Included are all species of Betta, Colisa,  Ctenopoma, Helostoma, Osphronemu,s Macropodus, Parasphaerichthys, Sphaerichthys, Trichopsis, Trichogaster, and others

 

Completion of this class requires the spawning of five species.

 

5 points: Betta Picta and all Macropodus

10 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

15 points: All Macropodus and Trichopsis species

20 points: Sphaerichthys and Parasphaerichthys sp.

 

Class C - Cyprinds (Barbs, Danios, and Rasboras)

This family contains many of the Carp-like fishes, including well-known groups such as barbs, danios, rasboras, various "sharks", minnows, bitterlings, and the Chinese Algae Eater. It also contains such fishes as the flying fox, daces, asps, log suckers, roachs, chubs and Goldfish and Koi .  Included are all species of Boraras, Balantiocheilus, Barbodes, Barbonymus, Capoeta, Carassius, Crossocheilus, Cyprinus, Danio, Danionella, Devario, Epalzeorhynchos, Garra, Gyrinocheilus, Inlecypris, Labeo, Microrasbora, Puntius, Rasbora, Sawbwa, Sundadanio, Tanichthys, Trigonostigma,and many others

 

Completion of this class requires the spawning of six species.

 

5 points: None

10 points: All Barbs, Danios, and Rasboras

15 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

20 points: All Loaches and Sharks

 

Class D – Rainbowfishes and Relatives

This class contains the rainbowfish and Blue-eyes.  The majority inhabits the freshwater streams of Australian and New Guinea

Included are all species of Bedotia, Chilatherina, Craterocephalus, Glossolepis, Iriatherina, Marosatherina, Melanotaenia, Pseudomugil, Rhadinocentrus, and Telmatherina

Completion of this class requires the spawning of four species.

 

5 points: Melanotaenia splendida

10 points: All species of the genera Glossolepis and Melanotaenias

15 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

20 points: Iriatherina werneri

 

Class E – Characins

This class consists of the Tetras, Piranha, pencilfish, headstanders, and hatchetfish.  Most characins have adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins.  Included are all species of Abramites, Anostomus, Astyanax, Brachychalcinus, Carnegiella, Copella, Distichodus, Exodon, Gasteropelecus, Gymnocorymbus, Hemigrammus, Hyphessobrycon, Inpaichthys, Leporinus, Metynnis, Nannostomus, Nematobrycon, Paracheirodon, Phenacogrammus, Pyrrhulina, Serrasalmidae, Thoracocharax, and others

Completion of this class requires the spawning of five species.

 

5 points: None

10 points: Inpaichthys and Nematobrycon species

15 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

20 points: Paracheirodon and Thoracocharax species

 

Class F – Cichlids

Cichlids are very common aquarium fish.  They populate both Central/South America and Africa.  Included are all species of Central/South America cichlids Acarichthys, Aequidens, Amphilophu,s Astronotus, Apistogramma, Archocentrus, Biotodoma, Biotoecus, Caquetaia, Cichlasoma, Crenicara, Crenicichla, Geophagus, Gymnogeophagus, Heros, Herichthys, Herotilapia, Nannacara, Neetroplus, Parachromis, Pterophyllum, Satanoperca, Symphysodon, Teleocichla, Thorichthys, Uaru, Vieja and others

Included are all species of African cichlids Altolamprologus, Astatotilapia, Aulonocara, Copadichromis, Cyathopharynx, Cynotilapia, Cyprichromis, Etroplus, Haplochromis, Hemichromis, Hemihaplochromis, Julidochromis, Labeotropheus, Lamprologus, Maylandia, Melanochromis, Neolamprologus, Nimbochromis, Pelvicachromis, Pseudocrenilabrus, Pseudotropheus, Sarotherodon, Steatocranus, Teleograma, Tilapia, Tropheus, Yssichromis, and others

 

Completion of this class requires the spawning of ten species (five American and five African).

 

5 points: All Archocentrus Herotilapia, Haplochromis, Sarotherodon, Hemihaplochromis, and Tilapia

10 points: All Pterophyllum, Geophagus, Apistogramma, Parachromis, Thorichthys, Nannacara, Neetroplus, Steatocranus and Haplochromis

15 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

20 points: Crenicichla Cyathopharynx Etroplus, Satanoperca Symphysodon Telograma and Cyathopharynx

 

 

Class G – Killifish

Killifish include some of the most colorful of all aquarium fish.  Most spawn in one of 2 ways, they lay eggs in plants(mop spawners) or lay eggs in the subsrate (peat spawners) Included are all species of Aphyosemion, Aphanius, Aplocheilichthys, Aplocheilus, Austrolebias, Chromaphyosemion, Epiplatys, Fundulopanchax, Jordanella, Kryptolebias, Lamprichthys, Nothobranchius, Oryzias, Pachypanchax, Procatopus,  Pseudepiplatys, Rivulus and others

 

Completion of this class requires the spawning of six species.

Included are all species of Acanthicus, Ancistrus, Aspidoras, Baryancistrus, Brochis, Corydoras, Dianema, Farlowella, Hemiancistrus, Hoplosternum, Hypancistrus, Hypostomus, Leporacanthicus, Megalechis, Otocinclus, Panaque, Peckoltia, Pseudacanthicus, Pseudancistrus, Pterygoplichthys, Rineloricaria, Scobinancistrus, Sturisoma, Synodontis and many others

 

Completion of this class requires the spawning of three species.

 

5 points: none

10 points: Corydoras aeneus and paleatus and Ancistrus sp3

15 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

20 points:  Hoplosternum Synodontis Dianema species


Class I ­ Amphibians and invertebrates

This class contains the amphibians (salamanders/newts, frogs, caecilians) and the Freshwater invertebrates (snails, shrimp, crawfish)

 

Completion of this class requires the spawning of three species.

 

5 points: All freshwater snails

10 points: All species not mentioned in other groups

15 points: Shrimp, Crawfish, and Frogs

20 points:  Salamanders, Newts, and Axolotls
